How to fill in this PAT Certificate template
This template has all the same fields you will find on a paper pad. The only difference is that rather than having to hand write them, you do it all on your phone or tablet.
Step #1: Download the PDF, and save it somewhere safe on your computer. For each new customer, we recommend making a copy of this file first.
Step #2: With the template copy, open it in a PDF reader such as Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Reader, Apple Preview, or equivalent on your phone.
Step #3: Fill out all the basic details including that of your company, your customer, and the site.
Step #4: Following this, there is a table where you can write details about each appliance including:
- Unique ID
- Make & model
- Location
- Visual inspection
- Fuse rating
- Voltage
- And more…
Step #5: Once finished, export the file and save it with an appropriate name for easy organisation. This is an important step, as it will “bake” information in so it can’t be edited.
Step #6: Send the file to your customer, office staff, and anyone else that needs a copy.
What is a Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) Certificate?
PAT certificates are designed to help employers guarantee the safety of portable electrical appliances in their workplace. This can be everything from electric drills to kettles and portable heaters.
While there is no legal requirement to have a PAT certificate, employers do have a legal responsibility to ensure the safety of the electrical appliances in their premises. A PAT test certificate is a great way to provide solid evidence that due diligence has been carried out.
Our PAT test certificate template has plenty of space to include all the appliances in a workspace, numbered with a unique ID for future verification and reference. After the tester completes the necessary steps, each appliance is also given a pass or fail mark.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there any difference between a PDF PAT test template and a paper certificate?
The short answer is no. There is no practical difference between a paper certificate and a digital certificate.
The only difference is in terms of your workflow as a tradesperson, and the benefits going paperless offers to your customers.
How often do landlords need to get a PAT test?
Since it isn’t a legal requirement to have a PAT certificate, there is no straightforward answer to this question.
However, if landlords want to have legal evidence that they took the necessary steps to ensure workplace safety, a PAT test can be no older than 12 months.
Can I keep and reuse this PAT test certificate template?
Yes – absolutely. Our blank PDF PAT test certificate template can be used and reused freely.
We would stress the differences between using a PDF template and dedicated software, however. Software like FieldRocket makes the creation and management of certificates a much more streamlined process. It does this by providing an all-in-one solution to scheduling, quotes, invoices, service reminders, and much more to help you save time and make more money.
Is there a better way to organise all my electrical certificates?
A PDF template is a great way to kickstart your digital journey. However, storing and organising PDF templates can get messy if you don’t have an organised system in place.
Using job management software like FieldRocket automates this process and allows you to be much more hands-off whilst staying completely organised. Each certificate and record you create is automatically filed away and can be sorted by job addresses, customer details, and more.
Who can carry out a PAT test?
You do not need to be an electrical engineer to carry out a portable appliance test. However, the tester does need the relevant training and expertise to be able to complete a certificate. There are several training courses you can complete online to become a certified PAT tester.
Is a PAT certificate a legal requirement for employers?
Employers have no direct legal obligation to have a PAT certificate. However, they do have a legal responsibility to ensure all electrical appliances in the workplace are safe to use to prevent accidents.
A PAT certificate is designed to provide evidence that this duty has been undertaken, and to provide peace of mind for managers and employers.
Because of this, many electricians will carry out portable appliance testing and issue PAT certificates.
