What is an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR)?

Create custom forms for your team
Sometimes referred to as a ‘landlord safety test’ or a ‘homebuyer’s test’, an Electrical Installation Condition Report, or EICR, is a certificate designed to assess the safety of electrical installations in a property.

With the introduction of the new electrical safety standards in 2020, all domestic landlords are now required to obtain an EICR every 5 years to guarantee the safety of their property for their tenants. At the same time, commercial property landlords need an EICR to guarantee the safety of employees, tenants, and clients.

The report is broken down into 3 codes:

    • Code 1 (C1): Danger present & risk of injury.
    • Code 2 (C2): Potentially dangerous.
    • Further Investigation (FI): Further investigation required without delay.
    • Code 3 (C3): Improvement recommended.

If any electrical components are identified with a C1 or C2, the landlord must ensure remedial work is carried out.  Any C3 components do not require further work, but adjustments could be made to make the property safer.

What are the benefits of an EICR PDF template?

A certificate – especially an EICR – is no stranger to an electrician. Each year, thousands of EICRs are completed and handed off to customers. They’ve traditionally been done on paper pads of blank forms – so how is a digital pdf template better?

There’s less to carry around. EICRs are complicated forms with technical information and hundreds of tiny boxes to fill out. Each EICR is 8 pages long (16 with carbon copies) – meaning your paper pad can be a hefty stack hundreds of pages thick.
It’s much neater. Doing things digitally means there’s no messy handwriting and mistakes are easily corrected before being sent to the customer. There’s also no more risk of water damage, tears, and smudges.
Email or print unlimited copies. This makes it easy for customers that want more than one copy or have lost their EICR. With a digital PDF, you can quickly send another copy.
Easy filing and organisation. Rather than having to file your EICRs and other certificates when you get home or on the weekend, you can quickly and easily store your PDF on your device. If you store it on the cloud, you won’t be able to misplace them, either.
You don’t have to buy paper templates. These pads cost money to buy – sometimes upward of £30 for a stack. Our PDF template is free to download and keep using – and has all the above benefits.

A free pdf template makes this process quick, easy, and risk-free. Simply download our template and try it out for yourself – with no cost involved, there’s no harm in trying.

What should an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) Include?

How much should an EICR cost?

In the UK, electricians charge between 100 – 300+ for an electrical safety check and EICR.

Flat rates are very rarely given for EICRs because the scope of the work varies depending on several factors. For example, the larger homes will have much more to check, while the complexity of the wiring (which varies between flats and houses) affects the price as well.

For electricians, it’s important to consider your profit when setting prices. A paper pad of EICR forms can cost up to £30 – a cost which is completely erased with a fillable pdf template.

        Frequently Asked Questions

Is there any difference between a pdf EICR template and a paper certificate?

There is no practical difference between a paper EICR and our pdf template, as all necessary fields are present for full regulatory compliance.

The only difference will be the fact you can type out and easily modify information, save, and email the form to your customer. If you prefer hard copies, the completed form can always be printed out.

What is the difference between an EIC and an EICR?

An EIC is an Electrical Installation Certificate, and is used in new-builds or for properties with new electrical installations. An EICR is an Electrical Installation Condition Report and has a similar goal in mind (ensuring the safety of all electrical components), but is used for houses with existing electrical wiring.

How often do landlords need to get a new EICR certificate?

Landlords must get an EICR every 5 years for their property. For electricians, this is a great opportunity to generate repeat business. Click here to find out how you can use FieldRocket’s automated service reminder system to effortlessly capture this demand.

Can I keep and reuse this EICR certificate template?

Absolutely. Our blank EICR template can be used and reused as many times as you would like.

Going paperless with your certificates is a great step forward – but filling out a pdf on your phone isn’t always the easiest thing to do, and you’ve still got to manually organise and file them away.

Using the FieldRocket app, filling out EICRs and other industry certificates is made intuitive and easy. It’s also integrated with other aspects of your job like quoting, invoicing, scheduling, automated reminders and more – meaning everything can be consolidated into an all-in-one platform to save time, effort, and money.

Is there a better way to organise all my electrical certificates?

Whether you decide to fill your EICR online or print them off, you’ve still got to regularly sort through and file them away. This is a time consuming process that’s incredibly mundane and easy to make mistakes with.

FieldRocket offers a much sleeker and streamlined way of running an electrical business. Each certificate and record you create is automatically filed away and can be sorted by job addresses, customer details, and more.
